Hever Castle is situated in Edenbridge Kent, west of Tonbridge. Much of Hever’s existing magnificence is all thanks to Lord Astor, who spent hefty sums from his personal wealth to restore it in the early part of the 20th century and filling it with treasures which people come from all across the world to see. The spotless castle which dates back to the 13th century is more like a large mansion and in Tudor times was the upbringing home of Anne Boleyn and her family, making it a great treat for history buffs.

The gardens at Hever Castle were built somewhere around 1904 and 1908 by Joseph Cheal and Son.
The splendid Italian Garden was designed to demonstrate William Astors collection of Italian sculpture and the 35 acre lake at the far end of the garden took 800 men two years to develop.

The gardens are being constantly improved, including the additions of a 110 metre herbaceous border, a period herb garden, yew hedge maze and a water maze.

The gardens are planned to provide a display at any season of the year, so tourists can come in any time of the year and not be disappointed.

The Hevet Castle can easily be marked as the ideal place for a picnic, howsoever car parking is no longer allowed inside the grounds and is now to be found opposite the estate’s main foyer. Ever since 1983, the castle has been owned by Broadland Properties Limited and can be visited by the general public. The castle has a homely ambiance and comprises historic 16th century portraits; furniture and tapestries, tulips, wallflowers and pansies form a carpet of colour all along the Pompeian Wall. The rhododendrons and azaleas look stunning particularly beside the Spring Bank.

The oldest part of Hever Castle dates back to 1270 and comprised of the gatehouse and a walled bailey, it was not until the 1500′s that the Bullen family purchased the castle and added a Tudor dwelling, that became the home of Anne Boleyn. The castle and moat in late March is surrounded by snowdrops, crocus and early daffodils.

There is no dearth of activities that visitors can indulge in apart from exploring the gardens, which even include a splashing water maze and a yew maze. They can stroll around Anne Boleyn’s Walk or Sunday Walk or enjoy one of several special events that take place throughout the year. These include gardening events which include sessions with the head gardener. For more family oriented fun, Hever Castle also hosts jousting tournaments every summer, which is considered to be its most popular events.

Bedgebury Pinetum, © Flickr

Bedgebury is an outdoor spot – open around the year, except for Christmas Day – and you must dress appropriately to handle the weather conditions. For the sake of caring for the environment, be caring of others and do not litter around or injure the animals, flowers, trees or plants.

Bedgebury Forest and Pinetum have forever been wooded so are categorized as ancient woodland spots, and many tourists flock all around the year for the view. Ever since the Forestry Commission bought the spot in 1924 many of the native trees have been replaced by conifers or sweet chestnut over much of the region. Profitable forestry management, which continued up to the 1990s, was assisted by tree nurseries and sawmills in the forest; the focus is now on recreation, marketed as ‘Adventure in a world of trees at Bedgebury’. Facilities consist of walking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and orienteering based around a Visitor Centre. The theme of the play region is Victorian plant-hunters developing a link to the world renowned Pinetum collection, promoting themes of conservation and wildlife preservation at the same time.

The expansion of the recreational amenities have been cautiously planned to take into account conservation issues and minimise disruption to Bedgebury’s plentiful wildlife and particular habitats. Though no surveys of the natural resource have formerly been undertaken many features are known to exist and have been explored by many. The change in supervision centre from timber production to public recreation presents a perfect prospect to make large numbers of individuals more aware of this aspect of their cultural tradition, while helping the administration to raise the funds required for expansion. This shift also represents a welcome change for visitors from the traditional sights and sound of modern city life and helps them to get away from it all.

Bedgebury is nearby the Kent/East Sussex border, 2 miles north of Flimwell and an hour’s travel from south east London, Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Ashford, Hastings and Eastbourne. Etchingham (on the Hastings line from Charing Cross or London Bridge) is the closest station to Bedgebury. It’s about a 30 minute cycle ride up the A21 (there is a footpath along the edge of the northbound carriageway). On the other hand, Tunbridge Wells, Frant and Wadhurst (on the Hastings line) and Staplehurst and Marden (on the Ashford line) are also close by. If one is up to the distances it is well worth the walk or the cycle ride.
